Subspace

𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞

Subspace by definition is an altered mental state that can be experienced through BDSM or other forms of kink play. It’s experience is described as an intense mind and body trance similar to the adrenaline high runner’s experience during an intense workout. This state of euphoria is usually triggered by the intense emotional and physical stimulation during a session. Now, not everyone will experience subspace. There is no one size fits all description for someone’s experience either.

Let’s get into my favorite portion of our subspace conversation: The chemical response of the brain. Throughout a session, your pain and pleasure receptors are sending a flood of a variety of chemicals through the body. You’ve got adrenaline, endorphins, enkephalins; which are our natural pain relievers and all part of our fight or flight response. It also produces similar effects morphine can give. You’ve got these different contributors that not only increase the pain threshold of the submissive as the scene intensifies, but you’ve also got the possibility of reaching a trance like state due to all these hormones and chemicals

Sounds great, right? Well, due to the intensity of any prolonged stimulus, subspace may cause the submissive to become less verbal and as a dom, it is your responsibility to keep control of the situation and bring the sub safely down from the high because serious injury could occur during a scenario where the submissive has reached subspace and can no longer verbalize their safe words and/or safe signals (ALWAYS ESTABLISH SAFE WORDS/SIGNALS BEFORE ACTING OUT A SCENE).

Now that we’ve talked about the effects of Subspace, let’s talk about aftercare. It can be incredibly damaging, both physically and psychologically, for a sub in subspace to be left without being brought back safely. This means nurturing your submissive through reassurance, through affection. By telling them they did a good job or that you’re proud of them and I cannot stress this last one enough COMMUNICATION. Providing your submissive a safe environment to sleep, rest and regain their strength is one of the ways you can also help. Never take without giving something back.
